Going Greek in Ralphs- Three colored grapes in one!

image

Shopping around in my neighborhood store, I came across this AWESOME medially of grapes and bought 2 boxes!!

Now all I need is a hot guy in a Toga with a huge leaf fan to feed them to me while sitting in a royal throne.
Hey, a girl can dream right?

I wonder how my boyfriend Bryan would feel about wearing a toga…

I can’t wait to use these flavors in all kinds of recipes, salads and smoothies this week 🙂

Who wouldn’t like 3 colors of grapes in one? Pure genius.

Unhealthy period food- Nutella Croissants

image

image

Yes, before you judge me for posting sugar-packed-buttery-croissants on my health blog… All I have to say is I don’t care. For 5 days out of the month, I’m a crampy-chocolate-craving-DIVA who watches Sex and the City for hours; and punches anything that comes near me with male genitalia.

For the remaining 25 days I’m a healthy salad & smoothie loving Princess.

So, as I cram shovelfulls of Nutella into my guilt-free mouth… I’ll end this period post by saying- I’m real, I’m honest, and it’s okay to have an off day… Or 5.

In T-minus 4 days, I’ll be back to my healthy loving self. Until then, there better be a Godiva Chocolate store within walking distance.

Sincerely,
Crampy-Chocolate-Craving-DIVA…Brittany

A beginner’s guide: The do’s and don’ts of sautĂ©ing vegetables

Although I’m proud to have come so far in my fitspirational journey, I have yet to learn how to SautĂ©. As I’ve flown through various cookbooks on my healthy cooking adventures, I’ve come to realize that learning how to sautĂ© veggies is not optional anymore, it’s a necessity. When I used to only know how to cook Mac & Cheese with burnt toast on the side, the word sautĂ© was not in my dictionary of frequently used words. But guess what, it is now!

Since my wonderful boyfriend Bryan has recently introduced me to the delicious world of Portabella mushrooms; I thought this would be the perfect place to start!

It took me about 3 batches of sautéing Baby Bellas before I got them perfect, so I hope to save you from wasting some of your own, by not making the mistakes I made on my first attempts.

The Do’s and Don’ts of sautĂ©ing:

THE DON’Ts-

  • Don’t walk away from the kitchen and forget you’re sautĂ©ing veggies. Then, especially don’t take your baby Yorkie for a walk. Trust me on this, even if you tell yourself you won’t forget, it’s a high possibility you will. You may come back from your walk; with a kitchen full of smoke, and some very black flaming mushrooms. (Not like I did anything like that that… I confess nothing!)
  • Don’t set the temperature on your stove top too high. SautĂ©ing too fast is a great way to burn the living- daylights out of your veggies. Setting your stove to low-medium heat worked the best.
  • Don’t use too much oil!! As you can see from my beautiful oil-catastrophy below, you’ll end up sucking the extra oil out from your veggies with a napkin. See guys, I told you I’d share the good, the bad AND the ugly on my health blog. Learn from my mistake, start with a little bit of oil, and slowly add more if you need it.

  • Don’t forget to flip them. Keep a spatula near by (yay I get to use my pink spatula) and since you WON’T be leaving the kitchen *ehhem walking your yorkie*, keep an eye on your veggies and flip or toss them when you see the edges getting a light golden brown.

THE DO’S-

  • Do set a timer! If you’re a beginner (as I was when I began learning how to sautĂ©) it is really helpful to set a timer for a shorter amount of time then you think it should take to sautĂ© your veggies.
  • Do your homework, and make sure you pick the best oil for your sautĂ©ing adventures. For a guide to picking the best oil for cooking, click here.
  • Do have fun! Learning a new cooking skill can be a LOT of fun, especially if you pick the right music to sing into your spatula to 🙂

Let me know if you’ve learned any great do’s or don’ts throughout your cooking experience, and I’ll add it to the list!

How much protein should you be eating every day?

I worked at Warp Tour in San Diego yesterday (the big music concert) and I was so excited when I found a vegetarian/vegan booth!

I’m pretty sure I spent at least 30 mins talking to the booth owners about some new fabulous vegetarian recipes. What I can I say, I love every minute of being a life-long vegetarian! Anyway, in the midst of our savory conversation, we stumbled upon the subject of daily protein intake.

Then the question arose: How much protein should I be eating every day?

The vegetarian/vegan booth owner Megan, jumped at the chance to hand me this awesome sheet about our daily protein needs. Check it out! Vegetarians, Vegans AND meat-eaters should get familiar with how much protein their bodies need.

image

To calculate your daily protein needs in grams, use this equation above that I highlighted in pink above!

Body weight x 0.36

Here’s mine-
100 x. 036= 36 grams of protein

Now let’s break this down even more; what does 36 grams of protein look like in food form?

image

As you can see,  Seitan (not sure what this is, but I’m going to Google it) has the highest protein value of the group, followed by tofu.  Unfortunately, my avocado obsession didn’t make the list. A medium avocado only has 4 grams of protein. That means I’d have to eat 9 avocados to get my daily protein need fulfilled. Ok ok ok… I may be an avocado fanatic, however I’m sure that obsession would end pretty quick with 9 avocados a day!

Take a minute to figure out your own daily protein needs. Test out those dusty math skills from high-school, that you never thought you’d use again. Don’t worry, I made sure to leave out the dreaded “F” word out of this equation (NO FRACTIONS ALLOWED ON THIS HEALTH BLOG!)

Put 2 tbsp of peanut butter on a piece of wheat toast tomorrow morning, and begin your day with a healthy protein smile 🙂

P.S on a side note, one of my best friends Sarai (who is also a vegetarian, yay) and I had a BLAST in the photo booth that was in our tent!
