Change Your Running Style to Target Different Muscle Groups

  • Abs:┬áSlow down your pace slightly and run with high knees up to the chest; you can also run with knees out to the sides to target the obliques
  • Abs and quads:┬áRun with straight legs, scissor kicking your feet straight in front of you.
  • Abs and calves:┬áDo a running skip, kicking one knee high into the chest with each hop.
  • Calves:┬áLand softly only on the balls of the feet, as if tiptoe running.
  • Calves and hamstrings:┬áAs you run, kick your heels into your glutes.
  • Hamstrings:┬áRun backwards; alternate looking over your right and left shoulder to avoid bumping into anything.
  • Inner and outer thighs:┬áRun sideways crossing your back foot over your front with each step; alternate leading with the right and left legs.
  • Outer thighs and glutes (aka saddlebags):┬áRun with legs slightly wider than hips-width distance apart.

Ballet stretching!

Getting my stretch on, in my private ballet lesson!

It has been so long since I took a serious ballet class, and believe it or not, I’m not NEARLY as flexible as I used to be. However as they say, “Once a ballerina, always a ballerina…” because this photo was taken after not having stretched in 2 years. Needless to say, I’ve passionately missed dance.

Good news! Since I’ve received a BUNCH of requests for “How-To” tutorials on improving your flexibility, I have some ideas in the making. Keep an eye out for those posts coming soon ­čÖé
