We pet baby chicks, NOT eat them!

pablo

At a lovely afternoon adventure at my Godmother’s house, we discovered her 15 new baby chicks! They were SO cute. Bryan and I named this one Pablo. After getting to spend some quality time with Pablo, it breaks my heart to think about all the baby chicks and chickens that are suffering so much at food mills. Kept in tiny cages with no room to fly around and be free. It’s little moments like today with Pablo that remind me why I’ve been a Vegetarian my whole life.

Choose free-range chicken eggs at the store, or even better; buy your food from local farmers markets.

Proud vegetarian for 24 years!!! Pablo power 🙂

Zesty Chipotle Hummus

image

Sorry… I’m not sorry for this half-eaten hummus picture!

I didn’t even think of snapping a picture before my best friend and I practically devoured it in 5 minutes flat.

Yep it was THAT good.

This is a bit more of an easier way to make hummus. Great for a mid-day snack and it’s the perfect compliment to some flat bread poppyseed chips or even some healthy carrots 🙂

Save yourself some money and time, and make a batch of this zesty deliciousness at home!

If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be a vegetarian.

“Eating ONE hamburger every day can increase the death rate by 1/3” – Graham Hill

Throughout my many awesome years of health blogging, not to mention my entire 24 years of lifelong vegetarianism; one of the most common questions I get asked is, “Brittany, why would you possibly bother being vegetarian?”

Here are my 3 answers to that question-

Animal Cruelty

Did you know we raise 10 BILLION animals each year for meat? Out of those 10 billion- a majority of them are raised in factory farm conditions that we wouldn’t even consider for our own cats, dogs etc. If you’d like to learn more about this- Google these 3 words: “animal factory cruelty”. Spend ONE minute on Google images, and I guarantee you’ll give vegetarianism another thought.

Environmental

Meat causes more emissions than all transportation combined. Cars, trains, planes, boats- you name it.

Beef production uses 100 times more water then most vegetables do.

Increase in Meat Consumption

We as a society are eating TWICE as much meat as we did in the 50’s. What used to be a small side dish, is now the main course.
With the traditional Western diet, the average American consumes about double the protein her or his body needs.

Additionally, the main source of protein comes from animal products which are high in fat and saturated fat.

Stand against animal cruelty, help the environment, allow your body to be healthier, and live a longer life; being vegetarian is AWESOME.

When I tell people “I’m A Vegetarian”, they say:

Image

“Oh…Does that mean you eat fish?”

“You must be a member of Pita”

“Why did the tofu cross the road? To prove he wasn’t chicken.”

“Oh you’re a vegetarian?? It’s okay I’ll make Lamb.”

“If vegetarians eat vegetables, what do humanitarians eat?”

“I’m a Vegetarian too.. except I eat Chicken and Fish”

“I tried being vegetarian once… and then I passed an In-N-Out”

“Do you eat animal crackers?”

Some clever answers Vegetarian’s can reply with:

“What if I was kidnapped and the only way I could be released was if you ate a steak?”

Answer: I’d eat the steak, you’d release me and I’d go straight to the police, get you arrested, and you’d end up with a criminal record. Not a smart move, eh?

“God put animals on the earth to be eaten”

Answer: I’m an atheist.

“You can’t live without meat!”

Answer: OMG, I must be a ghost then.

“You’ll get ill and die, because you’ll be anemic and not get enough protein!”

Answer: Are a dietitian? No? I’d rather take my nutritional advice from someone with a qualification in diet than an idiot who stuff McDonalds in their face.

“Why don’t you eat fish, fish isn’t meat, it’s fish!”

Answer: Really? Wow, when was the last time you saw a field of fish swaying gently in the breeze.

Usually when someone asks me to define being a vegetarian: I just say “I don’t eat anything with a face”

Have a wonderful and healthy day guys!!

*Don’t take life too seriously, sometimes you have to just sit back and laugh a little 🙂

How much protein should you be eating every day?

I worked at Warp Tour in San Diego yesterday (the big music concert) and I was so excited when I found a vegetarian/vegan booth!

I’m pretty sure I spent at least 30 mins talking to the booth owners about some new fabulous vegetarian recipes. What I can I say, I love every minute of being a life-long vegetarian! Anyway, in the midst of our savory conversation, we stumbled upon the subject of daily protein intake.

Then the question arose: How much protein should I be eating every day?

The vegetarian/vegan booth owner Megan, jumped at the chance to hand me this awesome sheet about our daily protein needs. Check it out! Vegetarians, Vegans AND meat-eaters should get familiar with how much protein their bodies need.

To calculate your daily protein needs in grams, use this equation above that I highlighted in pink above!

Body weight x 0.36

Here’s mine-
100 x. 036= 36 grams of protein

Now let’s break this down even more; what does 36 grams of protein look like in food form?

image

As you can see,  Seitan (not sure what this is, but I’m going to Google it) has the highest protein value of the group, followed by tofu.  Unfortunately, my avocado obsession didn’t make the list. A medium avocado only has 4 grams of protein. That means I’d have to eat 9 avocados to get my daily protein need fulfilled. Ok ok ok… I may be an avocado fanatic, however I’m sure that obsession would end pretty quick with 9 avocados a day!

Take a minute to figure out your own daily protein needs. Test out those dusty math skills from high-school, that you never thought you’d use again. Don’t worry, I made sure to leave out the dreaded “F” word out of this equation (NO FRACTIONS ALLOWED ON THIS HEALTH BLOG!)

Put 2 tbsp of peanut butter on a piece of wheat toast tomorrow morning, and begin your day with a healthy protein smile 🙂

P.S on a side note, one of my best friends Sarai (who is also a vegetarian, yay) and I had a BLAST in the photo booth that was in our tent!
