High Energy Breakfast Ideas- Your questions answered!

high energy breakfast

Hi!! Awe thanks for taking the time to come visit me, nice to meet you 🙂

Great question!

Breakfast for me is BY FAR the most important meal of the day. I start every morning WITHOUT fail with a delicious fruit smoothie (click here for my fruit smoothie page)

Fruit and veggies in a delicious smoothie is a FABULOUS way to kick start your energy level for the day.

Other high energy breakfast foods:

EGGS
Why:Rich in protein, eggs help prevent food cravings.

OATMEAL
Why:The complex carbohydrates in oatmeal provide vitamins and minerals that give us energy. (Simple carbohydrates, like those in white bread, carry the risk of being converted to fat and stored.) Go for old-fashioned or steel-cut oats. They’re high in protein and soluble fiber, which lowers cholesterol and makes you feel fuller longer.

NUT BUTTER

Why: Butter made from nuts like almonds, cashews, and peanuts are filled with vitamin E, protein, magnesium, calcium, and potassium. Concerned about fat? Nut butter contains monounsaturated fats—also found in olive oil—which are the good fats that lower bad cholesterol and increase good cholesterol.

WHOLE GRAIN BREAD
Why: “Muffins, bagels, and low fiber cereals all give a temporary energy boost and then you’ll crash,” says New York Food Trainers’ dietician Lauren Slayton. Instead, choose whole grains to help stabilize blood sugar levels and fill you up until your next meal.

LEAFY GREENS
Why: Spinach, kale, chard, and other leafy greens are nutrition powerhouses. Try to work in other veggies, too—the recommended daily serving is 2 to 3 cups. You’ll fill your body with fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.

FRUIT
Why: In general, fruits are filled with fiber (pears, apples, berries, and kiwis), vitamin C (papaya, oranges), disease-fighting antioxidants (strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries), and cell- and muscle-building potassium (bananas).

SEEDS
Why: A handful of nuts and seeds such as flaxseeds and pumpkin seeds add great flavor and texture, but they also contribute protein, vitamin E, and heart-healthy monounsaturated fats and omega-3’s.

YOGURT
Why: A good no-cook breakfast option, yogurt is also an excellent source of calcium and protein.

If you balance every day with a great hearty meal in the morning, I guarantee you that it’ll be FULL of energy.

Remember to snack on healthy foods regularly too. That keeps your blood sugar up, and prevents you from getting sleepy!

10 ways to get your health back on track!

10 ways

Weather you’re a beginner or just finding yourself a little off track lately, you can absolutely begin to take steps towards the healthy life you’ve always wanted.

Guess what, if life isn’t going the way you want it to- and the word “vegetable” hasn’t crossed your lips in a few weeks… you’re not alone! Don’t let it get you down, let it be encouragement to make next week even better.

So what if you’ve had a few donuts lately, just because yesterday wasn’t so great, doesn’t mean that today won’t be the beginning of a new you. However, change isn’t easy. It takes 21 days to form a habit, and those 21 days aren’t going to be a piece of cake (or a fork full of salad since we’re being healthy here haha.)

It’s okay to take baby steps. Make the decision that your bad habits don’t define you.

Take this list above and start actually applying them. When? NOW! Don’t say you’ll start this later. Later never comes. Recommit your day TODAY. Grab some water, dust off your running shoes and LET’S DO THIS!

How much protein should you be eating every day?

I worked at Warp Tour in San Diego yesterday (the big music concert) and I was so excited when I found a vegetarian/vegan booth!

I’m pretty sure I spent at least 30 mins talking to the booth owners about some new fabulous vegetarian recipes. What I can I say, I love every minute of being a life-long vegetarian! Anyway, in the midst of our savory conversation, we stumbled upon the subject of daily protein intake.

Then the question arose: How much protein should I be eating every day?

The vegetarian/vegan booth owner Megan, jumped at the chance to hand me this awesome sheet about our daily protein needs. Check it out! Vegetarians, Vegans AND meat-eaters should get familiar with how much protein their bodies need.

To calculate your daily protein needs in grams, use this equation above that I highlighted in pink above!

Body weight x 0.36

Here’s mine-
100 x. 036= 36 grams of protein

Now let’s break this down even more; what does 36 grams of protein look like in food form?

image

As you can see,  Seitan (not sure what this is, but I’m going to Google it) has the highest protein value of the group, followed by tofu.  Unfortunately, my avocado obsession didn’t make the list. A medium avocado only has 4 grams of protein. That means I’d have to eat 9 avocados to get my daily protein need fulfilled. Ok ok ok… I may be an avocado fanatic, however I’m sure that obsession would end pretty quick with 9 avocados a day!

Take a minute to figure out your own daily protein needs. Test out those dusty math skills from high-school, that you never thought you’d use again. Don’t worry, I made sure to leave out the dreaded “F” word out of this equation (NO FRACTIONS ALLOWED ON THIS HEALTH BLOG!)

Put 2 tbsp of peanut butter on a piece of wheat toast tomorrow morning, and begin your day with a healthy protein smile 🙂

P.S on a side note, one of my best friends Sarai (who is also a vegetarian, yay) and I had a BLAST in the photo booth that was in our tent!

Jillian Michaels’ advice

image

Jillian Michaels is by far one of my biggest fitness inspirations.

Her workout videos are incredible, we share the same dieting ideas (to eat healthy, NOT starve yourself) and to EARN your body though hard work and nutrition.

Jillian is fierce, fabulous, and can terrify you right though the TV. I really feel like she is going to jump through my screen and chew my ear off if I don’t push through one more rep of bicycle crunches!

I’m about to begin week 3 of her 90 day workout video series “Body Revolution”. It’s absolutely incredible.

These tips alove are excellent, I’m honored to post them on my health blog. Take notes everyone!
